Keeping The Notion Of Safety In Mind During Home Renovations
Homeowners in significant numbers are expected to spruce up their homes in 2014, with Hanley Wood reporting that spending on home remodeling will continue to be positive after 2013 saw a 10% increase compared to the previous year.
But it can be easy for anyone looking to remodel to neglect the notion of safety while carrying out home remodeling. This can lead to injuries because of improper window installations, slippery floors etc. Also, some personal injury cases can even result in death, so it is quite important to keep safety in mind during home renovations.
Some of the measures that can be taken include:
1. Keep tools in a safe place
The power tools used during home renovations are quite attractive for the kids as they share similar outer characters as toys with push buttons and moving sliders. This is the reason why parents should ask the contractors or renovators to keep the tools out of sight when they are not in use, or at least take out the batteries and the cords.
An even better approach is to collect all the tools at the end of the day and place them in a secured area. Apart from keeping it away from the children, keeping them in a single place also gives the added benefit of organization and it makes it easy to search for them the next day.
2. Secure the floor
Homeowners might opt for hard flooring such as linoleum, vinyl or marble for the flooring inside the home, but they increase slipping incidents due to poor footing or water spills. However, protective coverings can easily protect against dangerous falls and the material of the floor doesn’t have to be replaced.
Anti-slip coverings however doesn’t have to come at the cost of aesthetic appeal, as tread sheets by Actis Furio show that sheets can be used for decorative coverings on floors that don’t need special maintenance and can keep the aesthetic elements of the floor intact. Apart from protective coverings, there are also anti-spray options available, which can be applied on the flooring directly.
3. Keep the air clean
Multiple family members can become a victim of asthma and allergies because renovation projects can create an open pathway for the dust and particles. Therefore important steps are required to protect indoor air quality and prevent damage to family health.
For the purpose, vents and HVAC ducts can be sealed inside the area, and horizontal spaces can be vacuumed to prevent the dust from mixing in the air. Plastic sheets can also be used to seal the HVAC units and other vulnerable areas, while disposable drop cloths are going to work in other cases.
4. Change lifestyle
Each member of the family has to follow a different lifestyle during home renovation because when the job is underway, such as a bathroom remodel, temporarily an alternative room would be useful for kids, elderly and members who can easily get injured while the renovation is carried out.
Just having a temporary bathroom for the kids or elderly in an alternative room (the guest room perhaps) with supplies such as shampoos, toothbrushes etc. can help them stay out of the area being renovated and away from injuries.
