More Megapixels Isn’t Always Better For Your Smartphone Camera

Mobile phone companies these days have started launching phones that have at least 13MP camera and it’s spreading across all companies like a wildfire. People have got an assumption that more megapixels in a camera is going to result in a better photo but is that really true? Absolutely not! Just having more megapixels in a camera is never going to produce a better image. The main thing you should see is the sensor.

The 2 most important things that bring out a good image are:

  • Sensor
  • Image Processing
  1. Sensor:

Ask any good photographers “What’s the most important thing about a camera?” And they’ll tell you – the sensor. The main reason for this is because that’s the part that captures the light. It is essentially that the sensor is good enough to capture the object clearly.

When the light that passes through the camera lens enters the camera sensor, it translates it into an electronic signal. The image processor then creates the image and corrects it the normal photographic flaws.

So matter how much your mega pixel is, it’s the camera sensor that plays a bigger role in the outcome of the photo.

  1. Image Processing:

Almost all the high-end smartphone now have dedicated graphics processors in their CPU’s. This is built into the chip and can quickly render images like photos and videos without overloading the main application processor.

Samsung are the ones who are mainly concentrating on this. Though Samsung Phones Under 10,000 don’t have this feature, all their high end phones come with dedicated graphic processors. This feature is not found in most mobiles under 10,000, let alone Samsung. HTC is another company that has been working on this.
