Remote DBA Experts Discuss Pros And Cons Of MYSQL
If you have been a programmer or a developer chances are that you must have encountered MY SQL on multiple occasions. MY SQL has been around for many years now, and is still considered to be one of the most popular relational database management systems in the world. Since the last couple of years its popularity has been on the decline and the dilemma or the battle between open sources or proprietary software has been questioned and discussed and addressed on various forums. In this article remote database administrator experts try to list down the pros and cons of using MY SQL for all the programmers.
Advantages of MYSQL
Ease of use
MySQL is extremely easy to install and since it is an open source many additional third party tools are available online to optimize and enhance the performance of the same making it very easy to set up completely for implementation. As long as you know basic language and different types of engines, it’s fairly simple to work with
Its open source
Oracles purchase of Sun Microsystems and in turn possession of MYSQL people feared that MY SQL won’t be open for all. But Oracle has kept their control over MY SQL very minimal and a lot of the codes are still available online for free. Hence the open source is still maintained.
It’s light on your pockets
Now it really depends on what exactly is the utilization of the MY SQL but as majority of the codes are available online for free, the use of MYSQL become extremely cheap. Although there are now other alternatives available in the market that are also free and outperform MYSQL but not many are aware of these and are much more comfortable with MYSQL.
It’s used universally
Last couple of years the user base of MYSQL has been on the decline but MYSQL is still the most popular database management systems used across the globe. It is compatible with all engines and operating systems and that makes it a universal solution.
Disadvantages of MYSQL
Stability
Many SQL users have reported over the years and have also raised their concerns to remote database administrator experts- remotedba.com that they have faced certain reliability issues with regards to a certain functions of MYSQL. Of course this doesn’t affect the credibility of MYSQL much but when performing certain tasks, other alternatives to MYSQL are better choice when performing those particular functions.
Poor performance scaling
Although, MYSQL is virtually capable of handling enormous amount of data, it gets a little slow and lagging if there are multiple processes. Hence for people having requirement of simultaneous process requirements should better consider other options than MYSQL
Development
The thing that has been the advantage of MYSQL also has been it biggest disadvantage. Open source community is active but is not regular. There are many constraints in development of MYSQL as it’s not community-driven. After purchase of Sun Microsystems by Oracle people expect that MYSQL should focus more on development. But at the same time people expect MYSQL to remain open source hence it’s a conflicting interest from consumers’ base. After oracle bought sun Microsystems the development has in fact come to a complete halt. There is not communication between independent developer communities and oracle and hence there is a huge development lag issue.
Add-ons
Set up of MYSQL is much simpler than it counterparts but the basic MYSQL is almost very plain vanilla version of SQL. And it really can’t perform any of the more popularly used tasks without add-ons. Hence the dependence like other systems is not on engines but on the add-ons. Tracking these add-ons down sometimes can be a problem and that has bothers many developers over the years.
